OBDF 210 : 3D Printed Chess Set - Concepts

Hello! Welcome back to my object design blog. This time we have been tasked with creating and 3d printing a chess set - something that is causing my brain to have too many ideas and drift in all sorts of directions. To get things started I thought I'd jump into Rhino and design a very basic chess set to practice some shapes and make myself a bit more confident. Here is some basic practice.

Wow. How boring.

Okay, time to get creative. One of my first ideas was "Wizard/Witch Hats" ... That didn't really pan out because even though it sounds cool conceptually, in reality, I imagine that it would look like a lot of droopy 3d structures. A cool idea that may need to be a part of a bigger project in the future or something... Who knows.

For my next idea, I was browsing Thingiverse and after quite a bit of scrolling for inspiration, I noticed a render of a Bob-omb from Mario and I thought that could serve as a cool concept of creating a different style Bob-omb for each chess piece. (these are not that render)

A quick rundown of that train of thought is :

i.) Pawn - Stock Bobomb ii.) Bishop - Cleric Bobomb iii.) Rook - Crazy Bobomb iv.) Knight - Bob-omb with a Helmet v.) Queen - Larger with Crown         vi.) King - Largest with Crown

This idea feels a little derivative though. Let's jump into my next set of concepts. Lightsaber designs. Who doesn't love lightsabers am I right? I thought this would be cool since they were originally created by mixing ordinary objects together. I could just make some different designs and give them each a base.

i.) Pawn - Padawan Lightsaber (smaller, less unique) ii.) Bishop - Jedi Master Lightsaber (maybe a polearm saber?) iii.) Rook - Double Bladed Lightsaber (moves across the chessboard the way I would imagine Darth Maul to) iv.) Knight - Jedi Knight Lightsaber v.) Queen - Sith Emperor Lightsaber       vi.) King - Sith Lightsaber

This... Isn't going to work, they are too tall and I can't figure out how to make a base that would support making 6 of these individually.

Last but not least (in my opinion)... Gravestones.

Keeping it a little simpler with these designs, I thought it would be a cool spin on the chess set. Probably the most feasible of the designs that I have come up with so far, hopefully I can push this further if I decide to pursue it. Thanks for checking out my post!
