OBDF 210: Surface Design Study - LASER CUT SAMPLE

Welcome back to my blog! This time we are travelling back to the surface design stuff to finally see how my pattern turned out after laser cutting it into some wood!

First things first, I decided to try and create a new design using the coolest elements from my original one, as something that I thought would likely make a better wood engraving. Unfortunately, after trimming and attempting to hatch it I realized that it was maybe a bit much and I decided to scale it back yet again and return to what I knew.

(I was pretty bummed because I was really enjoying how this surface was turning out. Maybe I will explore it again in the future, but I think I need help planning how to best connect all the line work. Anyways! Here is what I started with:

And here is what the design looked like after some refining and converting the hatched colours to black and white in order for it to be read by the laser scanner!

I ended up with two different attempts to see what changes I could make to either pull out a detail or blend it into the grain, The design on the left has a lot more detail but I like the subtleness of the one on the right, despite some of the detail getting washed out. Either way, I am pretty happy with how these turned out!

Thanks for checking out my Laser Cut Sample! :)
